How Base64 Encoding Works (Simplified)

Binary data is made of 8-bit bytes. Base64 takes 3 bytes (24 bits) and splits them into 4 groups of 6 bits each. Each 6-bit value (0-63) maps to one of the 64 ASCII characters. If the input is not divisible by 3, padding = characters are added to make the output length a multiple of 4.
