Area conversions show up in some of the biggest purchases you will make: buying land listed in acres when you think in hectares, ordering flooring sold by the square foot for a room you measured in meters, or comparing property listings across countries that use different units. Getting the conversion wrong means ordering too much material — or too little.
Our free Area Converter handles every common unit instantly, but knowing the relationships helps you sanity-check results and estimate on the fly.

Real-World Conversion Examples
1. Flooring and Renovation
A room that measures 4 m × 5 m is 20 m². Flooring is often priced per square foot, so convert: 20 × 10.764 = 215.3 ft². Always add 5–10% for waste and cuts. Our area converter gives you the exact figure in one step.
2. Buying Land
A rural property listed at 2.5 acres: multiply by 0.4047 to get 1.01 hectares, or by 4,046.86 to get 10,117 m². If a listing quotes 0.5 hectares, that is about 1.24 acres. Land buyers routinely lose track of which unit the price per unit refers to — always convert to one unit before comparing two properties.
3. International Real Estate
An apartment advertised as 85 m² in Europe is about 915 ft² — a common size for a two-bedroom. A US listing of 1,200 ft² is about 111 m². Converting before comparing keeps the numbers honest.
Manual Conversion Formulas
- Square feet → square meters: multiply by 0.0929 (or divide by 10.764)
- Square meters → square feet: multiply by 10.764
- Acres → hectares: multiply by 0.4047
- Hectares → acres: multiply by 2.471
- Acres → square feet: multiply by 43,560 (the classic “acre” definition)
- Square miles → square kilometers: multiply by 2.59
Common Mistakes to Avoid
| Mistake | Why It Happens | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Confusing acres with hectares | Both measure land, values look similar | 1 acre ≈ 0.4 ha — a 10 ha farm is ~24.7 acres |
| Using linear factors on areas | 1 m = 3.28 ft, so people multiply by 3.28 | Area factors are squared: use 10.764, not 3.28 |
| Mixing square yards with square meters | Similar names | 1 yd² = 0.836 m² |
