How Many Workdays Are in a Year? The Real Number Is Not 260

Ask most people how many workdays are in a year and you get “about 260.” That figure is only correct if you ignore every public holiday, never take a day off, and happen to work every weekday of a 365-day year. The real number for most full-time employees is closer to 250 — and for contractors billing by the day, that 10-day gap is a meaningful amount of money. Here is the calculation, done properly.

The Baseline: 260 Weekdays

Start with the arithmetic that needs no assumptions:

  • A common year has 365 days = 52 weeks + 1 day.
  • A leap year has 366 days = 52 weeks + 2 days.
  • Each week contains 5 weekdays, so 52 × 5 = 260 weekdays.

The leftover 1 or 2 days shift which weekday the year starts and ends on, but they add at most one extra weekday. So the true weekday count per year is 260 or 261 — never higher.

Subtracting Public Holidays

The number of official public holidays varies enormously by country. This is the single biggest variable:

Country Typical public holidays Weekdays remaining
United States 11 federal ~249-250
United Kingdom 8 bank holidays ~252-253
Germany 9-13 (varies by state) ~247-251
India ~17 national + regional ~240-245
Japan 16 ~244-245

Note that not every holiday falls on a weekday. A holiday landing on a Saturday costs you nothing extra. In the US, roughly 1-2 of the 11 federal holidays fall on a weekend in a given year, which is why US employees land near 250 rather than 249.

Subtracting Paid Time Off

Then layer personal leave on top. Typical full-time allowances:

  • US: 10-15 days average paid vacation, plus about 8 sick days.
  • EU minimum: 20 days statutory paid leave, often 25-30 in practice.
  • Australia: 20 days annual leave + 10 paid sick days.

An American with 12 vacation days and 6 sick days actually works about 250 − 18 = 232 days. A German with 30 days of leave works roughly 249 − 30 = 219 days.

A Worked 2026 Example

For a US employee in 2026 with 12 vacation days and 6 sick days:

  1. Weekdays in 2026: 261 (2026 begins on a Thursday; the extra day is a weekday).
  2. Subtract 11 federal holidays, of which 2 fall on weekends → 9 weekday holidays.
  3. 261 − 9 = 252 working weekdays.
  4. Subtract 12 vacation + 6 sick = 18 days.
  5. Actual working days: 234.

Why Contractors and Freelancers Should Care

If you bill a daily rate, your annual capacity is not 260 days. It is the figure above. At 230 billable days and a $500 day rate, gross is $115,000. If you had assumed 260 days, you would have forecast $130,000 — a 13% overestimate that shows up as a cash shortfall by October. Use your real holiday and leave counts, not the round number.

This is the same class of error as mixing up working days with calendar days when quoting a deadline. A date difference calculator separates the two so a two-week estimate is not silently delivered as ten calendar days.

FAQ

Is 260 workdays accurate? Only if you take no holidays and no leave. For most employees the real figure is 220-250.

Does a leap year add a workday? Usually not — the extra day is only a workday if February 29 falls on a weekday, which happens 3 out of every 4 leap years.

How many hours is that? At 8 hours per day, 250 workdays equals 2,000 hours, the standard full-time annual baseline.

Do part-time workers use the same math? They pro-rate: a 4-day week is 4/5 of the weekday total.
