Salary Calculator: How to Calculate Your Annual Salary from Hourly Wage (and Vice Versa)

Whether you are negotiating a job offer, comparing freelance rates to a salaried position, or just curious what your hourly rate works out to annually, knowing how to convert between hourly wages and annual salary is a fundamental personal finance skill. Our Salary Calculator and Hourly Wage Calculator make these conversions instant and accurate.

Standard Conversion Formulas

The standard formula assumes a 40-hour workweek and 52 weeks per year (2,080 hours total).

ConversionFormulaExample
Hourly → AnnualRate × 2,080$25/hr × 2,080 = $52,000/yr
Annual → HourlySalary ÷ 2,080$60,000 ÷ 2,080 = $28.85/hr
MonthlyAnnual ÷ 12$52,000 ÷ 12 = $4,333/mo
WeeklyAnnual ÷ 52$52,000 ÷ 52 = $1,000/wk

Use our Salary Calculator to convert any hourly rate to its annual equivalent instantly.

Common Salary Scenarios

Full-Time vs Part-Time

A full-time employee working 40 hours/week for 52 weeks gets 2,080 hours. But part-time roles (20–30 hours/week) or jobs with unpaid time off change the calculation. If you work 30 hours/week at $30/hr, your annual income is $30 × 30 × 52 = $46,800 — not the $62,400 you would earn at 40 hours.

Freelance and Contract Work

Freelancers need to account for unpaid time. A realistic calculation uses 1,500–1,800 billable hours per year (accounting for admin time, holidays, sick days, and gaps between contracts). If your freelance rate is $75/hr, your realistic annual income might be $75 × 1,600 = $120,000, not $75 × 2,080 = $156,000.

Comparing Job Offers

When comparing a $55,000 salary (with benefits) against a $30/hr contract role (without benefits), factor in the value of health insurance, retirement contributions, and paid time off. Benefits typically add 25–40% to total compensation. Use the Salary Calculator to see the hourly equivalent of a salaried offer.
